Quiet often, volume estimation is a complex and time-consuming task, usually performed by a human operator. The management process is a EUR 300B market, of which Europe’s share is about 40%. Each specific step in its chain requires an accurate knowledge of the waste volume. Our market study is focused on Ports, Terminals and Harbours, where volume is the standard unit of measurement of waste for tax collection. In these facilities, the need to reduce ship waiting times and to increase efficiency in resource planning, creates a demand for automatic solutions that allow real-time estimation of waste volumes. Moreover, recent changes in the European regulatory framework aimed at promoting waste discharge in ports and keeping records of the waste receptions reinforce the need for waste automation and classification.
CLEVER-Volume was developed by 3D Modelling Studio, as a unique innovative product for the automatic, remote and real-time volume measuring and classification of solid and organic waste. This includes a portable data acquisition sensor system and cloud-hosted software, working on a Software-as-a-Service basis. The proposed solution offers novelty and added value: due to its top performance it eliminates the human factor, dependence on installation and software ownership, all while ensuring 24h/365d real-time volume measuring.
Our solution was awarded the highly-competitive Smart Catalonia Challenge Award 2019 and is being implemented in the Port of Barcelona, managing over 100.000 m3 of solid waste a year. CLEVER-Volume enables the Port of Barcelona (and similar facilities) to charge transportation and deposit fees accurately and on the go. At the same time, major savings on warehouse and logistic costs are achieved, as well as more efficient business and operations processes, especially in the waste processing and recycling phases.
